What you talkin' 'bout, Holmes?

For those of you intrigued by my post on the Sherlock Holmes movie to be released this Christmas season, I want to provide the trailer. Here's the link to the YouTube site.

If you think Sherlock Holmes is slow, ponderous and too intellectual for you... think again.

I'm going to disagree with you. I think it looks pretty good. The casting was well done. I'm curious to see what they do to make the character accessible to a modern audience that may only be vaguely aware of the source material. And I think the partnership between Holmes and Watson looks interesting.

Plus: Bartitsu. Any time I see an obscure martial art on screen I get dizzy! Sometimes it's not about the cinematic art, but the collateral. Kingdom of Heaven = epic fail; but doggone it, where else, who else is going to give me a Templar heavy cavalry charge in glorious widescreen visuals? Huh? Right there... Something you aren't going to be able to see everyday. And often, that's why I go to the movies.

But maybe GI Joe will be awesome, and Sherlock Holmes will suck. We'll wait and see.

I'm with you on the obscure martial arts thing. But come on, John...they'll fuck it up. They always do. On a different note, did you know that I knew a martial art? I learned it while working in the cafe at Borders -- it's called "Baristasu". It's pretty deadly. There's only like 23 known practitioners in the whole world. I'm number 17. Back to Holmes, this is going to suck. When I first heard about it I seemed to forget that Guy Ritchie was directing. I thought for a moment it might be a classic gothic Holmes-type movie. It looks more like Hugh Jackman's Van Helsing. RDJ's accent is atrocious. Then again, I'm one of the few people who thought he was grossly miscast in Chaplin. Actually, he just wasn't up to the part. Sadly, I feel the same will be true for him with Holmes. You forget my favorite actor (Peter Cushing) played Holmes several times throughout his career and watching them try and DUMB HOLMES DOWN for a new audience is just unbelievably sad and painful for me. Have to go to work now. Will rant more later.
