What hath Wolverine wrought?

So I saw the awkwardly titled, X-Men: Origins: Wolverine when it came out.

I'm a huge Wolverine fan; but who isn't. I also dig Hugh Jackman. He's the modern version of Sean Connery. Women want him, men want to be him. He also seems like a nice guy and a pretty good actor.

How was the movie? Meh. I didn't hate it. It gave me lots of what I wanted to see. The opening credits montage was kinda cool, even poetic in its way. I enjoyed the fights.

And it left me wanting more. I want to see Wolverine in Japan, meeting more mutants, fighting ninjas, learning who he is even though he doesn't remember his former life.

But if someone asked me to explain the story, I'd be hard-pressed. There just isn't much story that makes sense.

Because the movie is so blah, I wasn't going to say anything about it. But I thought Dan D. might want my take on it.

I even decided to ignore Terminator Salvation because I had a feeling it would be pretty blah. The critics have been telling me this is true. There was a time when I would've gone to see anything with the Terminator-name attached, but not after Terminator 3. That turkey killed it all for me.

The next movie I really want to see is Pixar's Up. I'll take my daughter. She's not as jaded as me, so even if it turns out to be bad (unlikely), I know she'll enjoy it. After that? What's left between now and the August release of the obviously awful GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra? Anyone?

Looks like a good Summer for book-reading. I have a whole stack building-up. I just finished the wonderful A Canticle for Leibowitz. This was very entertaining, and raised some very interesting isssues of moral theology. I recently found an old, out-of-print history March of the Barbarians, by Harold Lamb about the Mongol Empire. This is always good stuff, and this author knew how to bring these exotic people to life. I can't wait to read it.

I'm also working my way through several new martial arts books, of course.

.........................what???

Personally, I have never actually wanted to be Hugh Jackman, unlike Mr. Connery who I actually had the pleasure of being one night for approximately 45 minutes. It actually felt kinda gross. I'm glad it didn't last too long.

Seriously though, thank you for your thoughts on Wolverine. Like most people I suspect, I had already seen the bootleg prior to the theatrical release. It was about as good as I expected. Considering it was that easy to destroy one of the most easily-adaptable and beloved of all comic book characters was not in the least bit surprising to me. What was surprising was how blindly Jackman would allow himself to be after reading the script. Really, I mean they had a guy whose mutant power was "shooting guns". Not a guy who had guns for hands or something like that -- no, his actual special power was that he was just really good at shooting guns...................we're done.

As for Terminator: whatever it's called, I will watch it on Blu-ray. I have no problems with it as of yet. Considering the critics hated it right out of the gate I have my suspicions that it might actually be okay. I'll have to get back to ya on that one.

If you stayed until the credits were finished you saw the Japan reference and the reason for another Wolverine movie.

Of course I stayed until the end of the credits. I read io9 (see Blog lists on the left) so I knew enough to stick around.

As for the "reason" for another Wolverine movie: isn't Wolverine kicking serious ass enough reason for another movie? Wolverine in Japan trashing ninjas is icing on the cake. He could be in Hoboken, NJ and beating up mutant Girl Scouts and I'd still happily pay to see it.

Dan -- I did not illegally download and view the unfinished version. I have greater respect for the underlying purpose of copyright law, which is to ensure that "Artisitc creativity" (however broadly this is defined) is rewarded and encourage other "artists" to produce.

I hope the next movie is a little more coherent since it won't need to shoehorn all the disconnected origin pieces for this character. Wolverine is saddled with one of the most convoluted origin stories known to homo-libros-comicus (Comic Reading Man).

I actually didn't download the movie myself but a friend did and I gladly borrowed it. If the movie were truly any good it would not have stopped people from going to the theater to see it 2,3,4 or more times. I would have gladly gone to see it again (and paid). But I'm glad I saw the leaked copy first. It stunk. It was a turd sandwich. Why was Wolverine and Sabretooth appearing in scenes from Glory, Paths of Glory, Saving Private Ryan and Platoon at the beginning? The whole f-in' thing didn't make any darn sense. I could care less about a sequel -- or yet another spinoff (Deadpool, really?)

Going back to the Terminator franchise for just a moment...I just finished watching T2: Skynet Edition on Blu-ray and was reminded of just how amazing summer blockbuster films could be 25 years or so ago. T2 is still a great film. It's a great story and coupled with the first Terminator it makes the tepid third entry and this new POS look utterly pedestrian. Cameron really knew what he was doing with those first two films and he really took his time to get them right. God bless him. I just hope his new film Avatar lives up to it's expectations. That and he really owes me after forcing me to sit through Titanic on VHS with my mom and sister. I'm never getting those three hours back again am I?

Lastly, I keep forgetting that the new Terminator was directed my McG. McG? That's not a person, it's a Gatorade flavor.
