Readers of
Edgar Rice Burroughs' tales of
John Carter, Warlord of Mars know full well what to expect when we finally land humans on
Mars. A decaying society of red skinned,
half naked men and women with ray guns, swords, and flying ships. There are also
four armed,
green-skinned humanoids with big eys and giant tusks. (All of which makes ERB, the creator of
Tarzan of the Apes, the perfect subject matter for illustrator and comic book maven
Frank Cho. His work illustrates this post.)
Scientists, on the other hand, get excited about things like "
frozen lakes." Jeez. Part of me understands why this is so significant and important, but I miss the days when our ignorance allowed a little romance and imagination to populate the landscape of Mars. Those were simpler times...

ERB is a favorite of mine. The Efficiency Expert is a fun rainy Sunday read.
